Give the sample a room to speak in.

A sample is evidence, not a promise. Read it at more than one distance, against the materials around it and in the light it will meet.

This realistic material study suggests scale and touch as fictional material inspiration; the actual colour and finish still belong to the supplied sample.

Start with the context.

Place the sample beside a room photograph, drawing or a small set of confirmed finishes. A surface can look very different against a cool white, a warm textile or another wood tone. If the sample will cover a large field, imagine its direction and repeat rather than judging only the small rectangle in your hand.

Write down what is known: the material name, supplier reference, finish and intended application. Keep questions separate from facts you have confirmed.

Use four simple checks.

  • Face: look straight on, then turn the sample slowly. Notice grain direction, texture, pattern repeat and areas that catch light.
  • Edge: turn it over. The edge can reveal the construction, thickness and the detail that will be visible after joining.
  • Scale: step back to the distance from which the finished wall, door or cabinet will normally be seen. Then return close to inspect touch and detail.
  • Neighbour: place it beside the floor, wall colour, fabric, metal or timber that will remain in the room. Compare relationships, not the sample alone.

Check it more than once.

Look in daylight and under the room’s intended lamps. A phone photograph can help remember the arrangement, but it can change colour through exposure, screen settings and white balance. Use it as a note, not as the final colour reference.

When several samples are close, leave them together for a few minutes and return after looking at the room. The first impression matters, but a second look often reveals which difference is material and which belongs to the surrounding context.
